My family loves tofu cooked in any styles. Sometimes we go for something simple like steamed it and top it with just fried garlic , oil and soya sauce and at times stuff it with minced meat and fish paste. Actually tofu is the easiest dish to serve for dinners especially for lazy working people like ME :p . But for this once I decided to try out something a bit more savory. I collected a few ingredients that I think will be a great combo for the tofu topping....this is my own creation....lol! and it turned out fantastic. Everyone thought it was from one of those recipes I collected, shhhh...better not tell them. Let them go on thinking or they won't eat :p I Just mix everything - dried scallop, wakame, fish paste, minced meat , and lots of wasabi powder into a paste and place them on top of the tofu , steamed it and make a sauce...that's it.... a wonderful steamed tofu with a topping that whets their appetite up lol! This is the best tofu dish I have eaten so far. LOL! Self praise is no praise but do try this out. It is good! :))
Claire went to Japan end of last year and bought some cooking ingredients for me and wasabi is one of them. She knows I am a die hard fan of wasabi.... a good friend knows what you like hmmm think of it she really deserves all my bakes lol!
a plate of delicious tofu with a savory touch....
ingredients for the topping- dried scallop, wakame, fish paste,
minced meat and lots of wasabi powder
stir and mix them into a well combined paste for the topping
use a fork scratch lines on the tofu surface so that
the paste will hold on to the tofu and not slip off the surface
of the tofu...do it gently or the tofu will break off :))
have more of the mixture for topping so
that you can taste more of the savory topping
all the tofu disappeared under 20 mintues....all of us attacked
it at one go and left behind just the gravy sauce....:p
2 slabs of silky tofu - cut into 8 pieces
Ingredients for the topping
50 gm of minced meat
100 gm of fish paste
some dried scallops - wash and soak for 5 minutes- drained
2 tbsp of wakame - wash and soak for 2 minutes - drained
1/2 tsp wasabi powder - optional * I add in 1 tsp
Sauce :
1 pip of garlic- chopped fine
1 tbsp of oyster sauce
1 tbsp of chinese cooking wine
a dash of pepper
1/2 cup water
1 tbsp of olive oil
thickening
1 tsp of corn flour
2 tbsp of water
Method:
1. Combine the topping ingredients and stir together with a fork until sticky and well mixed. Leave aside.
2. Use a fork and gently scratch lines on the surface of the tofu. Scoop the topping paste onto the surface and lightly press it down on the surface so that the paste holds to the scratch lines on the tofu.
3. Repeat till all the pieces are done. Place them on a plate and steam for 15-20 minutes on medium heat. Take out and gently remove the water that is on the plate.
4. Sautee the garlic with olive oil till fragrant, add in the all the remaining sauce ingredients and simmer till it boils , add in the thickening and dish out and gently pour over the steamed tofu. Serve it hot with white rice.
Enjoy and have a wonderful weekend !
